Heroin Treatment in Mississippi

There were a reported 117 drug rehabilitation and addiction treatment centers in operation in the state of Mississippi during 2003. Together these centers served 6,756 clients for alcohol and/or drug related addictions.

It appears that heroin is still a rare commodity in Mississippi, according to reports from several local and state government agencies. Most of the state’s heroin seizures come from addicts themselves, although there have been cases where heroin has been seized from independent small time traffickers. These dealers have only had small amounts with them. The heroin found in central and southern Mississippi is believed to have come from Texas and New Orleans, while the northern part of the state is getting its heroin delivered from the Memphis Tennessee area.

Numbers of drug seizures show that Mexican Brown (Black Tar) is the most popular type of heroin found throughout the state; however, South American white heroin is beginning to make its presence felt.

The social and health effects of heroin on our society today are staggering. Drug-related illness, death, and crime cost the nation approximately $66.9 billion. Every man, woman, and child in America pays nearly $1,000 annually to cover the expense of unnecessary health care, extra law enforcement, auto accidents, crime, and lost productivity resulting from substance abuse.25 Illicit drug use hurts families, businesses, and neighborhoods; impedes education; and chokes criminal justice, health, and social service systems.
