Distribution of heroin and heroin use have not been significant problems in Minnesota, but recent reports indicate there has been an increase in narcotic heroin use, especially in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area’s. On a bulk supply level, sources of supply include Nigerian/West African traffickers operating from Chicago and New York, African-American street gangs with ties to Chicago, and Mexican traffickers operating from the south of the boarder and linked through Chicago. On the street, heroin is sold primarily by Hispanic and African-American Street gangs.
It appears that the effects of heroin onour society have not dramatically affected the younger generations. The 1996 Monitoring The Future study found that one percent of twelfth graders had used heroin in the past year, and half of one percent had done so within the last thirty days. Encouragingly, both figures were lower than the 1995 findings. However, the 1996 survey showed that the number of youths who ever used heroin doubled between 1991 and 1996 among eighth and twelfth graders, reaching 2.4 percent and 1.8 percent respectively. These are older statistic bit it can reflect in today's problem.
