Drugs and alchohal can be found at the root of many other societal problems and it costs our country up to $500 billion annually, in addition to the thousands of lives lost, families destroyed and property crime crime.

In 2003, there were a reported 237 drug treatment and substance abuse centers in the state of Missouri. All of them combined to serve 17,117 clients for alcohol and/or drug related issues and addictions.

The sale and consumption of heroin in the St. Louis area is a significant concern to law enforcement and to the residents at large. Black tar, Mexican grade heroin, and to a lesser degree Mexican brown, Southwest Asian, and South American heroin are all available in and around St Louis. It appears heroin use spread from the City of St. Louis to surrounding areas, as evidenced by the continuing increase of heroin-related deaths in St. Louis County and recently more outer lying area’s. Mexican black tar and brown heroin are also available on a smaller level in Kansas City.

Heroin can cause feelings of depression, which may last for several weeks. Attempts to stop using heroin can fail simply because the withdrawal can be overwhelming and the addict cannot face it, causing the addict to use more heroin in an attempt to overcome these withdrawal symptoms. This overpowering addiction can cause the the addict to do anything to get heroin.
