Heroin Treatment in Nebraska

Heroin is not much of a threat to the state of Nebraska. The supply and use of heroin are decreasing in most areas of Nebraska State; however, Mexican black tar heroin and brown powdered heroin are still found in some areas. There is no domination in the transportation or distribution of heroin throughout the state of Nebraska; both Mexican criminal groups and Caucasian local’s transport the drug into Nebraska. Wholesale distribution is rarely occurring in Nebraska at this time. On a street/retail level, Mexican criminal groups, local independent dealers, and street gangs all sell heroin with no loyalties.

Treatment admissions related to heroin in publicly funded facilities in Nebraska--already at a low level—went down from 1997 through 2001. TEDS data indicate that heroin-related treatment admissions decreased from 40 in 1997 to 11 in 2001, giving more evidence to support the fact that abuse of the drug remains low in the state of Nebraska.

The idea that injecting heroin is cheaper than administering the drug in other ways may be right, but the consequences are much more severe. Injecting heroin gives a rush and provides, a 'bigger bang for the buck' than smoking or snorting heroin. However, injecting the drug results in higher levels of dependence for heroin. Heroin injectors use more often and quickly develop a tolerance to heroin. Many people have to use more heroin and use it more often. So, while injecting may give a bigger short term effect, it costs substantially more financially and healthwise in the long term.
