Heroin is a threat to the Utah area. Mexican tar heroin and brown powdered heroin are the main types available in the state of Utah; Southeast Asian heroin is available in very small amounts. Mexican crime rings (the primary transporters and wholesale distributors of heroin in Utah) ship the drug from pick up points in California and Arizona and directly across the boarder from Mexico.

The rate of heroin-related treatment admissions to government-funded facilities has remained relatively stable in Utah, mainly in Salt Lake County. Information from the Utah Division of Substance Abuse shows that heroin-related treatment admissions increased but only marginally from 1,524 in FY1997 to 1,567 in FY2001.  Throughout that time, nearly 80 percent of all admissions for the treatment of heroin abuse in the state were in Salt Lake City. Moreover, healthcare providers in Salt Lake County report that heroin-related rehabilitation admissions accounted for more than 10 percent of all drug- and alcohol-related treatments in FY2001; this showed the highest percentage of treatment admissions for heroin abuse in the state of Utah.

Heroin deaths are usually attributed to an overdose. This is an unpleasant aspect of the life of any heroin user, it does not matter if whether they inject heroin or any other ways of administration. When most persons refer to heroin deaths they normally call it overdose. However, this is not a correct statement. Surprisingly, heroin overdose is one of the least common forms of heroin deaths. This fact often causes many experienced heroin users to become cocky about heroin deaths.

A heroin overdose is exactly what the two words that make up the word indicate: "over dose"--having too high of a dosage of the substance. The primary effect of heroin is respiratory depression. If too much heroin is ingested, breathing will stop all together and the user will suffocate.
